Although I have been writing for many years, I am new to self-publishing. You may or not know that it is difficult for authors to make much money from their writing unless they become a phenomenal success of course and get their book or books made into film(s).
It’s strange that this is the case because writing takes up a lot of time, effort, energy and emotion and is just as valid as any other occupation.
I opted to self publish because I read an awful lot about how difficult it is to get traditionally published, that when you do get your work accepted often a publisher will want you to make so many changes and then still reject it if it doesn’t fit their marketing plan. Then if it does get published, you have to do most of your own marketing anyway.
I’ve noticed that many traditionally published well-known authors have started to self-publish too for various reasons, some akin to the ones outlined above.
Another reason I decided to self-publish was because I love getting feedback. It can take years to get work published and even longer to get feedback from readers. The reason I write is to entertain so it’s a big deal to get comments and find out if what I’m writing is of interest, if it moves people in anyway and if they are enjoying what I’m doing. This isn’t just vanity but a real need to communicate, which to my mind is what writing is all about.
After quite a bit of research it seems that most people don’t want to pay a great deal for e-books. This makes it even harder to make much money when publishing them, unless you happen to be a marketing genius. I’m learning re marketing but it’s going to take some years to hit the numbers I need to make a real success. You read in the press about what seem to be overnight successes but they really are the exception to the norm.
As well as publishing e-books, I make short stories available on my blog for people to read for free. If you feel they are worth more than that, please feel free to donate via Paypal to firstname.lastname@example.org. Whatever you feel a story is worth will be much appreciated and go towards the costs of e-publishing and marketing future works by Petra Kidd.
I will of course understand if you don’t want to donate. I’m happy if you just read my stories and leave a comment or review, they are just as valuable in getting my name and stories known.
